Biological plausibility

Biological plausibility is the existence of a physiological mechanism that may explain a cause-and-effect relationship. For example, epidemiology studies indicates that high/intense exposures to ionizing radiation increase the rates of cancer among exposed populations. This statistical association has biological plausibility since it is known that ionizing radiation may cause breaks in DNA strands. Biological plausibility is an essential element for establishing a cause-and-effect relationship.
