- Economide's response to EWG charges. "On October 1, 2010 the organization Environmental Working Group (EWG) submitted a letter to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The EWG letter questioned my nomination as a candidate for the EPA Science Advisory Board (SAB) Panel for the Review of the Hydraulic Fracturing Study Plan. EWG referenced three sentences from a September 13, 2010 guest editorial published in the Syracuse Post-Standard. I fully stand behind my statements in this specific op-ed and my publications throughout my 25 years working in the energy field. I have authored or co-authored numerous text books and journal articles dealing with petroleum engineering, natural gas, and more books and papers on hydraulic fracturing than any other. I have worked in over 70 countries on the subject and trained more than 6,000 engineers, worldwide. I trust that EPA will carefully examine the full body of work for all Science Advisory Board nominees including myself. I strongly believe that the agency will select a balanced panel of experts that will bring the necessary knowledge and skill sets, as well as bring an impartial outlook to the process. I do not stand to gain financially from this process nor have I ever pushed an agenda as EWG seems to claim. But I do believe that hydraulic fracturing is the only credible way to produce natural gas from practically any well in the United States and oil from at least 70 percent of all wells. Perhaps $200 billion of value at the wellhead rides on the unhindered continuation of environmentally sound hydraulic fracturing. It is my genuine hope to bring to the table my scientific expertise and understanding of this vital process to America’s economic well being and energy security."
